About the firm

Established in 2025, Van Der Walt & Associates Inc. is building a focused legal practice centred on litigation, dispute resolution and strategic legal advisory. The firm assists individuals, families and businesses in matters involving contested rights, legal risk and financial exposure.

The practice includes civil and commercial litigation, property and rental disputes, family law, Road Accident Fund and personal injury claims, governance and compliance advisory, and estate planning and administration. Across these areas, the team values clear thinking, thorough preparation, responsive communication and practical solutions.

What you will do

  • Assist with the assessment of matters, case preparation and the development of legal strategy.
  • Draft pleadings, notices, affidavits, correspondence, memoranda and other legal documents under supervision.
  • Prepare court files, indexed bundles, counsel briefs, chronologies and supporting documentation.
  • Attend client consultations, court proceedings, meetings and other matter-related engagements when required.
  • Track procedural dates, court deadlines, undertakings and follow-up actions accurately.
  • Maintain organised, complete and confidential matter files and records.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, counsel, experts, court officials, sheriffs and other role players.
  • Participate in the coursework, examinations and practical development required during the training contract.

What you will gain

This is an opportunity to build a strong practical foundation in a focused practice where candidate attorneys are expected to understand the purpose behind the work, not simply complete isolated tasks.

  • Direct supervision, guidance and constructive feedback.
  • Practical exposure to Magistrates’ Court and High Court processes.
  • Experience across litigation-led and advisory matters.
  • Development in legal drafting, research, procedure, matter management and client communication.
  • A professional environment that values reliability, accountability, clarity and follow-through.

Minimum criteria

  • An LLB recognised for admission in South Africa, completed by the agreed start date.
  • Eligibility to enter into and register a practical vocational training contract with the Legal Practice Council.
  • South African citizenship.
  • The ability to work full-time from the firm’s Tyger Valley office.

Background and skills

  • A sound academic foundation and a genuine interest in litigation, dispute resolution and strategic legal work.
  • Strong legal research, reasoning and writing ability.
  • Excellent organisation, deadline management and attention to detail.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication.
  • Integrity, discretion and respect for client confidentiality.
  • Confidence using Microsoft 365 and digital document management tools.

Previous exposure to a law firm, legal clinic, vacation programme, mooting, research or related legal work will be an advantage, but is not essential.

Who will thrive

  • The role will suit someone who prepares thoroughly, asks thoughtful questions and takes ownership of their work. A responsible, proactive approach and willingness to learn will stand you in good stead. You should welcome feedback, communicate early when a deadline or issue needs attention, remain calm under pressure and take pride in producing accurate work of a high quality.
